New Instagram Feature for the Visually Impaired

Instagram has recently introduced two new features to make it easier for people who are visually impaired to use the app! There are over 285 million people who are visually impaired in the world, so we're glad to hear that Instagram is taking these steps to make it more accessible for them. Instagram is a global platform, and it's nice to know that they're thinking of everyone's needs as they take steps forward. Learn more about these new improvements below! The first feature they added is custom alternative text, which allows users posting content to create a visual description of the images they're uploading. By doing so, visually impaired Instagram users will be able to have a screen reader to tell them the description of the post. This will allow users who are visually impaired to have a clearer understanding of the image by hearing an audible illustration.

How to Use Custom Alternative Text

  1. When posting an image on Instagram, tap on Advanced Settings.
  2. In the Accessibility tab, tap 'Write Alt Text'.
  3. Type in your Alt Text to have your photo described for people with visual impairments using a screen reader! Note: If you don't customize your alt text, it will be automatically created for your photos.

The other feature Instagram has introduced is automatic alternative text, which uses object recognition technology to produce a verbal explanation of images on the Instagram feed for screen readers. This way, people who are visually impaired are able to hear a list of items that an image contains while scrolling through the app. Instagram is always looking for ways to improve their features for every user, and we can't wait to see how they continue to make the app even more user-friendly and accessible!
